In a belief that has passed down the centuries, every Tibetan
believes that an individual, family or nation possesses a
“life-spirit”, called a “la”. This spirit is embodied in natural
phenomena such as mountains, lakes, river, and trees. The life
spirit of Tibet is identified with Lhamo Lhatso, and hence this
is the sacred lake of Tibet, which foretells the future of the
country and the rebirth of the Dalai Lamas. Every time a Dalai
Lama passes away, the searchers for the next reincarnation
travel to this lake for visions that will point them in the
direction of the next Dalai Lama. |
